In the latest development in the U.S. presidential race, Kamala Harris has a slight edge over Donald Trump, according to a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The poll shows Harris leading with 46% compared to Trump’s 43%, reflecting a closer contest as Trump reduces his previous six-point gap.

What Happened: Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris holds a slim lead over Republican Donald Trump in the race for the U.S. presidency, with Harris at 46% and Trump at 43% in a new Reuters/Ipsos poll. The poll, conducted over four days and completed on Monday, indicates a tightening race as Trump narrows the gap from a previous six-point deficit, Reuters reported on Wednesday.

Economic issues are at the forefront for voters, with 44% favoring Trump’s approach to the “cost of living” over Harris’s 38%. The poll also highlights that 70% of respondents consider the cost of living the most pressing economic issue for the next president to address. Trump has gained traction on economic matters, although Harris is seen as better at addressing income inequality, with 42% support compared to Trump’s 35%.

Immigration remains a significant concern, with 53% of voters agreeing that immigrants in the country illegally pose a public safety risk, a sentiment Trump has emphasized at rallies. Despite this, studies generally refute the claim that immigrants are more prone to crime than native-born Americans. Harris maintains a lead among likely voters, with 47% to Trump’s 45%, and is perceived as having greater mental acuity, with 55% of respondents agreeing she is “mentally sharp.”

In another poll by Times/Siena, Harris took lead over Trump by a small margin on questions about temperament, trust and change that can be critical in a presidential race.

Why It Matters: The race between Harris and Trump has seen fluctuations, with Harris previously achieving a record high six-point lead. However, independent voters remain a crucial demographic that could sway the election outcome.

Additionally, a survey of CFOs indicated a belief in Harris’s potential victory, despite Trump’s perceived economic strengths. Harris has also criticized Trump’s tariff policies, emphasizing their potential negative impact on Americans.
